Metro Bank Announces 2015 “Cash for College” Scholarship Recipients

HARRISBURG, Pa. (April 21, 2015) — Today, Metro Bank announced the recipients of its 2015 Metro Bank “Cash for College” scholarship program.

Seniors Makenna Brezitski of Bishop McDevitt High School, Natalya Carpenter of Cedar Crest High School and Ashley Kowalski of Manheim Central High School were selected as this year’s scholarship recipients from more than 500 submitted applications. Each student receives a $2,500 scholarship in recognition of their exceptional commitment to their local communities through volunteer service.

Makenna Brezitski, a Harrisburg resident, is co-founder of Owen’s Foundation, a program created in memory of her brother. Owen’s Foundation promotes pedestrian, driver, traffic and childhood safety while raising awareness of the consequences of distracted driving. Makenna reinforced the organization’s mission by creating “Orange 4 Owen” bracelets as a reminder to drive responsibly. The proceeds have funded the installation of new LED crosswalk signs on Bishop McDevitt High School’s campus.

Lebanon resident Natalya Carpenter is an active volunteer with Ting Ministries, a non-profit orphan ministry located overseas. Inspired by her time in Ukraine, she became involved with organizations that fund orphan children in hopes to one day start her own ministry. Natalya volunteers for an independent church in India and is a bible studies leader for Students for Christ, in addition to being an active member of her student council.

Ashley Kowalski of Manheim spends her Saturday mornings volunteering at Country Meadows Elderly Home comforting and supporting the residents during their daily routines. With a dream of joining the medical field, Ashley is well on her way after participating in award-winning research and studies concerning cervical cancer and diabetes. She also volunteers at the Reading Hospital SurgiCenter, participates in the American Cancer Society Relay for Life and leads a Mini-Thon Fundraising Committee.

This fall, Brezitski, Carpenter and Kowalski plan to attend Wake Forest University, Bucknell University and Lancaster Bible College, respectively.

The “Cash for College” scholarships will be used toward educational expenses at their schools.
