HARRISBURG, Pa. (January 20, 2014) -- This morning, Metro Bank and the Harrisburg School District announced the details of a Martin Luther King, Jr. themed essay contest during the Central Pennsylvania MLK Day of Service kick off ceremony at Camp Curtin Academy.
The Metro Bank sponsored MLK essay contest is open to Harrisburg School District students in 7-12th grades, with a category for 7-8th grade students and another for 9-12th grade students.
The Bank's Senior Retail Market Manager Brad Garfinkel shared with an auditorium of MLK Day of Service volunteers that students will be asked to explain in their own words the quote often used by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., "If I cannot do great things, I can do small things in a great way." In addition, students will describe in the essay how this quote relates to their life, community, city and school.
"We're happy to be able to show our support of education in the city of Harrisburg and honor Dr. King’s legacy through the MLK essay contest," said Metro Bank Chairman, President and CEO Gary L. Nalbandian.
Essays will be judged on a series of criteria, including focus and ability to communicate clearly, content and clear and concise thought process, style and conventions and creativity.
"We appreciate Metro Bank for sponsoring the MLK essay contest for our students, said Harrisburg School District Superintendent Dr. Sybil Knight-Burney. "It provides our students a meaningful opportunity to apply their writing skills on a subject which is historically and culturally relevant to their lives."
There will be a total of 12 prizes. Three $100 prizes and three $50 prizes will be awarded to students in the 7-8th grade category. For students in grades 9-12th, there is will be one $500 prize, one $250 prize, two $100 prizes and two $50 prizes.
